The Netsurfers’ Budgeting Podcast Plan
Title: Living Large By Spending Small Log Line: How to Save on living so you don't kill your expenses
Format: We will have an open discussion similar to ReelRejects where a topic is proposed and everyone discusses it.
Episode List
Episode 1: Lyft & Uber vs Taxis
Uber and Lyft are compared to Taxis and Cabs in terms of consumer interest, safety, costs, and convenience. The history of all companies are looked into as well, along with features and differences.
Episode 2: Brown Bagging It! Food Shopping and Cooking
With a tight budget, The Surfers discuss the benefits of cooking and packing meals as opposed to eating out all the time. They chart an expense graph to show how much an average person may spend on food if they always ordered out vs. cooking once in a while vs. cooking mainly and eating out occasionally. Websites, social media, and stores are referenced for recipes, grocery lists, and cooking tips.
Episode 3: Bills, Subscriptions, and Prescriptions (A talk about necessities)
The Surfers tackle saving money by arguing cell phone plans, entertainment subscriptions vs. cable, and other bills and necessities. Prepaid plans, paying bills in advance, and pharmacies are discussed.
Episode 4: Getting on Coupons, Groupons and Other advice on buying products.
Despite the stigma, the Surfers put a positive spin on coupons, sales, Groupon, and freebies. Marketing and the means of ‘sale’ items are talked about. RetailMeNot is referenced.
Episode 5: We are Living in a Material World: Fashion and Clothing
Fashion is on the table for the Surfers. How to buy clothing for cheap, thrift, lend, rent and sell clothing is also talked about. DIY websites are referenced as well.
Episode 6: Saving and Emergency Funds
Savings and Emergency funds are brought to light. Apps to curb overspending, splitting paychecks, and setting goals and repair money to the side are discussed.
Episode 7: Every Day I’m Hustlin’: Side Jobs and Earning Extra Money
The Surfers mention side jobs, work from home jobs, or other services that people can do to earn extra cash. Care. com, reviewing, testing products and reviewing, pitching creative ideas, transcription and Uber/Lyft are brought forth.
Episode 8: Going Out and Not Going Broke: Tips for Events And Going Out
The Surfers discuss ways of being social without breaking the bank. Topics include e-newsletters that notify you of events that are free or cheap (The Skint), complimentary tickets (Goldstar), subscriptions that charge a monthly fee for complementary tickets to events of any kind, and taking advantage of student discounts or free/ pay what you can offers.
Episode 9: My First Place, a Discussion on Apartments, Homes, and Other Forms of Living Arrangements
Housing is discussed. Topics include renting an apartment reasonably, renting rooms, prefab houses and more.
Episode 10: When to Fly: International Travel guidelines
Traveling for cheap is the last topic in the series. Flight planning times, tips, and websites are covered by The Surfers. They also talk about alternative sleeping accommodations such as hostels and AirBnb, traveling by bus or train, and using Groupon to book package deals.
Pitch: Appealing to both frugal and small spenders, we combined 'Adam Ruins Everything' with 'Reel Rejects' for a budgeting open discussion podcast where alternative forms of living and spending with real life opinions and experiences. Short sweet, and with a bit of humor, we believe our peer-to-peer approach will reach to a broad audience.
